The assembly of the first synthetic genome used to control a bacterial cell. One hundred 10,000 bp fragments (blue) were assembled into 100,000 bp fragments (green), which was assembled in vivo into the entire M. mycoides genome (red). The genome was extracted from yeast and placed into a bacterial cell with it's genome removed. The cell reproduced, as was viable.
